At the Qualcomm tech summit, the company officially announced the Snapdragon 888 flagship SoC. The new processor will power the flagship of 2021 from a plethora of manufacturers. Also, It is the first chipset in the 800 series to come with an integrated 5G modem at the chip level. And if you think what happened to the rumored successor to SD865 (i.e. SD 875) then this new chipset is the same. However, Qualcomm monikered the chipset 888 instead of 875 as 888 is a lucky number in China. So, let’s go thoroughly about the specs of Qualcomm Snapdragon 888.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Overview

CPU GPU and Memory

Snapdragon 888 Soc is based on a new 5nm process node. It brings the new Kryo 680 CPU. According to the company the new chipset brings 25% performance improvements over the Snapdragon 865’s Kryo 585, all thanks to the new efficient process node. Also, it is an octa core CPU with 1-3-4 architecture featuring 1x Kryo 680 Prime, 3x Kryo 680 Performance, and 4x Kryo 680 Efficiency cores.

The prime 680 Prime core features the ARM Cortex-X1 clocked at 2.84GHz. Similarly, the Kryo 680 Performance cores uses ARM Cortex-A78 clocked at 2.4Ghz. Finally, the three Kyro 680 efficiency cores use ARM Cortex-A55 clocked at 1.8Ghz. In terms of GPU, Qualcomm has placed the new Adreno 660 GPU. However, Adreno 660 is 35% faster in graphics rendering and 20% more power efficient than the previous generation.

Furthermore, moving on to memory, the Snapdragon 888 supports LPDDR5 memory at up to 3200MHz, and LPDDR4 memory up to 2133MHz, with a maximum of 16GB RAM.

5G connectivity

Unlike the Snapdragon 865, this chipset comes with an integrated modem, the 3rd generation 5nm Snapdragon X60 5G. Therefore, theoretically it’s more power efficient than the X55 5G modem. According to the company, the new modem brings global 5G compatibility for both mmWave and sub-6 bands that were lacking in X55.

Similarly, the X60 brings 5G carrier aggregation across FDD and TDD, which is a 1st for 5G modems. Also, peak downlink speeds have increased to 7.5Gbps for mmWave and 5Gbps for sub-6GHz, while the peak uplink speeds are 3Gbps. Notably, it also supports global 5G multi-SIM, Voice over NR, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing.

Additionally, the SoC packs a Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 system for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. In addition, these features make it the first mobile connectivity system to support Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, 4K QAM, 160MHz channels, and 4-stream DBS.

Camera Features

For imaging, the Snapdragon 888 comes with new Spectra 580 ISP with a new triple ISP architecture. It is said to be 35% faster than its predecessor. Qualcomm says with this triple ISP architecture the smartphone can be able to capture three photos from three different cameras at the same time at 28MP each. More interestingly, triple ISP can record video at the same time in 4K HDR quality. Likewise, the snapdragon 888 powered phones will be able to capture 4K at 120fps.

Further, it can capture photos and videos at 2.7 Gigapixels/second. Therefore, in one second the ISP can now capture 120 photos at 12MP each. And the new staggered HDR image sensors will allow the user to capture 4K HDR video with computational HDR with incredible dynamic range.

Moving on, the ISP can now capture photos in 10-bit color depth in the HEIF format. Also, the company has packed the new 10th gen 3A (autofocus, auto-exposure, and auto white balance) algorithm to improve photo quality. Hence, if these really work, we could get hands-on to the significantly improved Android smartphone cameras in 2021.

AI Engine

The flagship processor also comes with the sixth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine which delivers 26 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of performance. Compared to the previous generation Snapdragon 865 delivered 16 TOPS more. This AI engine is said to be more power-efficient as the Hexagon 780 DSP is now 3x faster in terms of performance-per-watt than the previous generation.

Meanwhile, it also features a 2nd generation Qualcomm Sensing HUB. Also, the company has added a dedicated always-on, low-power AI processing for intuitive intelligent features.

Snapdragon Elite Gaming Feature

 The Adreno 660 GPU provides the smooth gaming experience with sustained performance over long periods. Then 660 brings the biggest leap in the GPU performance in the Adreno GPU history. The Elite gaming features brings top AAA games to mobile, delivering smooth gaming with high frame rates up to 144fps, true 10-bit HDR in mobile gaming. It also brings desktop level gaming features like per-game updatable GPU drivers to mobile platforms. Also, Qualcomm has introduced two new features as Qualcomm Game Quick Touch and Variable Rate Shading (VRS).

Qualcomm Game Quick Touch feature reduces touch latency. Company says that Game Quick Touch can decrease the touch latency by up to 20%. Similarly, the VRS is here to reduce GPU workloads while providing “significant enhancements” to games. Therefore, the next generation of mobile games will run faster and at higher resolutions while still maintaining high visual fidelity.

Snapdragon 888 will drive flagship Android smartphones of 2021. Qualcomm has confirmed the names of 14 OEMs who will be launching Snapdragon 888-powered devices in the coming months. These include ASUS, Black Shark, Lenovo, LG, Meizu, Motorola, Nubia, Realme, OnePlus, OPPO, Sharp, Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE.

Xiaomi will implant the chip to its Mi 11 series. Realme also announced a device codenamed “Race” with the 888. Likewsie, Oppo will bring the chip to the upcoming Find X3 series. Soon all the devices with the Snapdragon 888 will be seen in 2021.
