Overview of Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra
Spec-wise the Galaxy S21 Ultra is the best premium Galaxy smartphone of 2021. The handset comes with the latest performance-centric chipset, enhanced camera capabilities and advanced displays that claim better experience.
Display and Design
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra features a screen size of 6.8 inch which is a little smaller than last year. The punch-hole Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel has QHD+ resolution of 1440 x 3200 pixels. The handset still maintains the curved sides with rounded corners. It has an aspect ratio of 20:9.
Further, the display has an adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz which can drop to 10Hz when not needed for the additional refreshes. It is the first display from Samsung able to run at 120Hz refresh rate while rendering in full 1440+ resolution. Moreover, it can get super bright with a peak brightness of 1500nits. Similarly the contrast has also improved by 50% compared to last year’s.
Moving on, the display as well as the rear of the smartphone is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. Apart from that, the S pen is now supported by the handset. However, it is sold as a separate entity. Hence, you have to buy a separate folio case to carry it or you can opt. to simply put it in your pocket.
The biggest highlight of S21 Ultra is its camera module. The first thing that you will notice is the huge camera bump which looks like a five camera setup. In actuality there are four of them and the final one is the Laser AF sensor. Similarly, the most notable changes here are two telephoto lenses: 10x periscope lens and traditional 3x lens. Both the lenses are of 10MP with different focal length.
The main camera is a 108MP ISOCELL HM3 sensor. It is a second iteration of a 108MP sensor which Samsung calls Bright Night sensor. It uses its 9-in-1 pixel binning to 12MP and brings improvements in processing super low light shots. Similarly, it is capable of 3x lossless digital zoom. The camera outputs an image in 12-bit RAW . Further, to address the focusing issue of last year S20 Ultra as it comes with laser AF.
Lastly, the 12MP ultrawide angle lens completes the rear camera setup.
On the front, there’s a 40 MP camera lens with aperture of f/2.2 on the punch hole setup for stunning selfies.
Furthermore, the handset is capable of capturing 8K footage at 24fps. Similarly, all camera sensors support 4k footage at 60fps, making it the first Samsung to do so.
The smartphone is designed with 12 and 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM paired with 128, 256 and 512 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. Therefore, Exynos 2100/Snapdragon 888, LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage type indicates that there’s no compromise in performance. Hence, the device can perform heavy duty tasks with ease. The handset operates on One UI 3.5 based on Android version 11.
Moreover, last year’s S20 Ultra received lots of criticism due to the use of Exynos 990. This year Exynos 2100 promises to deliver better performance as it has the same architecture as Snapdragon 888. Though, it is not sure how the Mali-G78 GPU will compete with Adreno 660 or SD 888.
Battery and Miscellaneous
The Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 5,000mAh non-removable battery which supports 25W fast charging. It also supports 15W fast wireless charging. This device is capable of 4.5W wireless reverse charging. However, following the footprint of Apple, the box now ships without a charger.
Meanwhile, S21 Ultra is the first phone to have Wi-Fi 6E support onboard. Therefore, it can work in the 6GHz band offering much more bandwidth with low latency. Also, some other features are Type-C port, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, Samsung DeX, Bixby, and stereo speakers
