Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Overview
Display and Design
Starting with the display, the Galaxy Note 20 comes with a 6.7” Super AMOLED screen, larger than its predecessor, up from 6.3”. The panel has Full HD+ resolution, 20:9 aspect ratio and 393 ppi pixel density. Disappointingly, you will find 60Hz refresh rate that is unbecoming of any phone that aims to call itself a flagship in 2020.
Likewise, Samsung shifted to a traditional flat panel from a curved one. The panel is however protected from Corning Gorilla Glass 5. But, the Gorilla Glass Victus which is 2x tougher and more scratch resistant than Gorilla Glass 6 would have been a great choice.
Further, the Infinity-O display has a small cutout for the front facing camera.
Moving on, the Note 20 is built out of a “glasstic” back. Simply understanding, the phone is built out of a polycarbonate back that feel like matte glass to touch. The frame are still metals. Additionally, It come with exciting new colors Mystic Gray, Mystic Green and Mystic Bronze.
The camera layout on the back has a makeover. The lens cutout are more distanced between each other and the backplate come in a contrasting color. However, it looks sleek and impressive in terms of design.
Furthermore, the S Pen has now shifted to bottom left instead of usual right.
In terms of optics, Note 20 comes with triple lens combination at the back. Firstly, the primary sensor is 12MP with f/1.8 aperture, dual Pixel Autofocus and optical image stabilization. Secondly, there’s a 64MP telephoto lens with f/2.0 lens, 3x optical zoom and upto 30x digital space zoom. Finally, completing the setup there’s a 12MP ultra-wide lens with f/2.2 and 120-degree field of view.
Upfront, there is a 10MP sensor for selfies and video calling.
You can record 8K footage at 24fps from the rear while the front camera is limited to 4K at 60fps. Similarly, you can choose a specific microphone in the device or any other microphone connected while recording in pro mode.
Performance and Memory
The Galaxy Note 20 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 Plus. Sadly, the Snapdragon powered version is available in USA, China and South Korea. While the rest of the world will get Exynos 990 variant.
In terms of memory and storage, this department is handle by LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage. You will get 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage. Disappointingily, the storage can’t be expanded. Compared to last’s years Note 10 it’s half the storage.
Software improvement and S Pen Stylus
Since it’s a Note, the S Pen comes with major improvements. Notably, one being the reduced latency. The latency has been reduced to 26ms from 42ms on the Note 20. The S Pen can be used as a gesture based remote control for your phone. Similar to magic wand you can scribble in the air to navigate through the phone. The S Pen itself has a 0.7mm pen tip diameter, 4096 pressure levels, and promises up to 24hrs of battery standby.
As we already know, Samsung is deepening its relationship with Microsoft in significant ways. The “Samsung Notes” app will sync with Microsoft OneNote later this year. It also gains the ability to annotate PDFs, match up audio recordings with your notes, and offers full folder management.
We know, “Your Phone” app on Windows 10 allows you to make calls, message, view notification and access photos. But for Galaxy Note 20 you can access its app on your desktop. Further, Samsung‘s desktop –like experience “DeX” is now fully wireless.
The S pen works as a mouse input for Wireless DeX. Basically, the DeX lets you use the smartphone as a CPU replacement for your desktop needs. You can also connect your device wirelessly to a Smart TV and manage both the TV and the phone simultaneously.
Microsoft is going to feature heavily for gaming, as Samsung will be pushing its compatibility with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. You will be able to enjoy 100+ Xbox One and Xbox Series X games through Microsoft’s xCloud gaming streaming service starting from next month.
Further, the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate bundle consists of PowerA’s MOGA XPS-X+ Bluetooth controller and a clip to hold your Galaxy Note 20. Those who will pre-order this bundle will get 3 months of subscription and $150 Samsung Credit.
Battery and Miscellaneous
The Galaxy Note 20 features 4,300 mAh battery which is significant upgrade from Note 10’s battery. However, there’s a downfall in the charging. The phone supports 25W USB-PD 3.0 charging whereas the Galaxy Note 10+ had 45W charging. Also, the Note 20 offers 15W wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.
Furthermore, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 has a range of connectivity options that include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, 5G, 4G LTE, GPS / A-GPS, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. The phone is IP68 water and dust resistant and has an in-display fingerprint sensor.
