Ahead of the announcement of the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung announced the Exynos 2100 at the virtual CES 2021 event. This is the chipset that will power the upcoming Galaxy S21 series. The chipset is the first from the company to have an integrated 5G modem. Likewise, it is the latest flagship SoC fabricated on a 5nm process node which is competing with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888.

Samsung Exynos 2100 Overview

Performance

Like the Snapdragon 888 the octa-core processor uses a CPU architecture with triple cluster design (1+3+4). In fact, it features the same cores configuration with higher core frequencies. The high performance one Cortex-X1 cores from ARM runs at 2.9GHz while the SD 888 has top frequency of 2.84GHz. Similarly, the power efficient cores i.e., three A78 cores and four A55 cores are also clocked higher (2.8GHz vs 2.4GHz and 1.8GHz vs 2.2GHz). Eventually, this chip is claimed to deliver 30% total CPU performance than its predecessor, Exynos 900 based on 7nm node.

As we have mentioned earlier, the SoC features same core configuration with higher frequencies compared to Snapdragon 888.Therefore, it might boast better CPU performance.

Moving on to graphics performance, this segment is handled by Mali-G78MP14 GPU with 14 cores. It is touted to deliver over 40% better performance compared to Exynos 990. Similarly, the Advanced Multi-IP Governor (AMIGO) will monitor and optimize power consumption and sustain GPU performance.

With the combined improvements in CPU, GPU, DSP, and NPU, the SoC achieves 26 TOPS performance. It is same number that the Qualcomm claims for the Snapdragon 888 SoC.

5G connectivity

The Exynos 2100 is the first flagship processor from Samsung with an integrated 5G modem. We have seen integrated 5G modem in Exynos 980 and Exynos 1080, but they are upper mid-range parts. This integrated 5G modem can achieve 7.35Gbps and 5.1Gbps downlink speed on a mmWave network and sub-6 network respectively. Similarly, the uplink speed is 3.67Gbps and 1.92Gbps respectively.

Display and Camera

Talking about the display, the chipset supports up to 120Hz refresh rate for UHD display. Similarly, refresh rate can be boasted to 144Hz for QHD+ display. On the other hand, Snapdragon supports [email protected] and [email protected]

On to photography aspect, the Snapdragon 888 has triple ISP which allowed the SoC to process 3 signal streams simultaneously. In contrast, the Exynos 2100 can process 4 single streams simultaneously and supports up to 6 individual sensors. Similarly, the new Image Signal Processor (ISP) is touted to support up to 200MP camera sensors. Yet, there aren’t any 200MP sensor in the market but Samsung is working on it.

To fuses image data from several camera sensors for better quality zoom and ultra-wide shots there’s a Multi-Camera and Frame Processor (MCFP). It is used to analyze the detect faces, scene and objects and pick the optimal settings.

The new chipset will first appear in the Galaxy S21 series that will make its debut tomorrow (14th Jan). As soon as the Galaxy S21 series will launch we will have our chance to benchmark the new Exynos chip. We’re hoping it’ll compete neck to neck with Snapdragon 888.
