Qualcomm is expected to launch the successor to Snapdragon 865 this December. The flagship chipset will be monikered as Qualcomm SD 875. This chipset will boast improvements to 5G networking, machine learning capabilities and an uplift in performance.
Snapdragon 875 specs: What to expect?
According to the leakster who goes Digital Chat Station by name confirmed that the 5nm chipset will have one Cortex-X1 core running at 2.84GHz, three Cortex-A78 clocked at 2.42 GHz and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 clocked at 1.8GHz. The power-hungry Core X1 will brings 23% improvements over Cortex-A78 and 30% better peak performance as expected by ARM experts.
The tri-clustered chipset will bring in-house Adreno 660 GPU and Hexagon DSP for machine learning. According to the rumored benchmark, it brings as much by 25% generational improvements. The cache and the memory bandwidth will also be improved and the chipset is said to provide better low-power consumption.
Similarly, the Hexagon DSP and machine learning hardware will also be improved. Further the boast in Spectra ISP could help to achieve more advancement in photography. Likewise, we might see improvements in video standards like recording 60fps 8k content. Support for upcoming AV1video codec, augmenting VP9 and HVEC decoding would be futureproof addition too. These are just speculation and we’ll have to wait and see what improvement will this chip bring.
Apart from all, the networking aspect will also be improved. The chip might receive full Wi-Fi 6 support and Wi-Fi 6E is also possible. The existing Bluetooth 5.1 could see added support for the new LE Audio codec as well.
Upcoming Flagship with Qualcomm SD 875
Snapdragon 875 with no doubt will deliver a beastly performance, but which are the smartphones that will come with it. As the leaks from Digital Chat Station, 5 new flagships will enter the market with SD 875 inside in the first quarter of 2021. These phones will offer the potent combinations of the 875 chip and 100W power brick, thanks to Quick Charge 5.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 phones is reported to come with this chip, we’ve already seen them crop up in benchmark. The OnePlus 9 Pro, Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Pro will also feature the chipset. A Meizu phone and one from LG is also reported to be powered by the 5nm beast.
As for the charging, the Samsung will stick with 45W, Xiaomi and OnePlus might use their own charging solutions. However, all these phones supports USB Power Delivery in one form or another Quick Charge 5 itself is built on top of USB-PD). Will there be SD875-based phones from other makers in first quarter?
