VoLTE in Nepal, Nepal Telecom HD voice service

Nepal Telecom, a state-owned telecom company, has started testing HD voice service. It is based on 4G LTE technology. The telco is currently testing HD voice services under the 4G LTE project, which is being expanded across the country.

Currently, the mobile device only connects to the Internet when using data. But, now in Telecom’s VoLTE (Voice over LTE), the mobile device will always be connected to the internet.

Telecom’s current 4G service is only used for internet data, while 3G fallback is used for voice calls. But now in VoLTE, voice calls will also run on 4G.

This means that even voice calls will now be on 4G Internet. Telecom has stated that in VoLTE, it is possible to communicate in a higher quality, i.e. in a natural voice, as compared to the current 3G.

What are VoLTE Advantage? – HD Voice Service

Primarily the telecom is generating the significant amount of revenue from Voice. OTT platforms like Viber, WhatsApp, Messenger are providing internet based voice and video services. Due to which revenue of the company has decreased. Therefore, the telecom is eager to commercialize the VoLTE service.

Some advantages of VoLTE service

1. Calls sounds better:

VoLTE enables high-definition (HD) voice quality that makes a mobile call sound fell natural (as if you are talking in person). HD voice uses a wider frequency range than narrowband voice services, which allows background noise to be reduced and callers’ voices to be enhanced.

2. Calls connect more quickly:

The traditional 2G and 3G service uses circuit -switched networks. Hence the time taken to establish a call with someone can be too long. However, in VoLTE calls set-up time will be reduced and people can connect even faster.

3. Longer Battery Life:

According to various research it is proven that the VoLTE calls consume less battery life. It is found to consume 40% less battery.

Using this service, users can enjoy the HD video calling feature. On the other hand the data transmission rate will also be higher. Similarly, there will be noticeable noise reduction compared to 2G and 3G calls.

Meanwhile, it is assumed that calls using VoLTE will be much cheaper than the current 2G and 3G technology. The company has also prepared a billing system for this, said Dilli Ram Adhikari, managing director of the telco.

Requirement

This service needs to be enabled by both the telecom and mobile manufacturer. Not every telecom operator whose SIM you will use have this feature. Likewise you will also need a VoLTE supported handset . The manufacturer needs to customize the VoLTE support in their handset.

VoLTE in Nepal -HD Voice Service

Nepal Telecom is all set to bring the VoLTE service in Nepal as 4G has already reached all 77 district. According to the company, the necessary work has already been done to run the VoLTE service on the latest model of Xiaomi and one model of Samsung.

The company also issued a notice on Wednesday to enable VoLTE on the sets of other smartphone makers. The company said it would test Band 3, Band 20 and VoLTE on 4G  mobile sets and urged suppliers and vendors to get in touch.

The telco is currently testing the VoLTE service in parallel with the sites currently operating on 4G service. The telco has requested suppliers and sellers to contact the office for technical testing of 4G Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 20 (800 MHz) and VoLTE.

After the test, the model of the mobile set supporting 4G LTE and Voice over LTE service will be posted on the website of Telecom. The company has stated that it will take some more time for the VoLTE service to come into commercial operation as various stages of testing have to be done.

If Telecom’s VoLTE is enabled in the systems of major smartphone makers, the company will probably launch the service commercially from Magh 22. After that, users will be able to activate the service by dialing the USSD code on the VoLTE-enabled mobile set, just like activating 4G.

Telecom is now manually opening the service for testing on Xiaomi’s latest model, which is VoLTE enabled, and a model from Samsung. Once the VoLTE is enabled from the system of VoLTE Telecom, the user can speak in a clear voice.

Also, users can experience high quality voice service when calling from VoLTE enabled mobiles and to IVR and landline numbers.
