Command Prompt or cmd is a command line interpreter application on Windows operating systems. Command prompt is also known as Ms-DOS Prompt. It is basically used for performing advanced administrative function and troubleshooting to solve some issues on Windows OS.

Command prompt comes with black background in default and white foreground. But most people actually don’t know that users can change the colors of background and text in cmd.exe by themselves. Moreover, some people might find it difficult to work on a black and white screen.

Change Background and text color in CMD

  1. Open “Command Prompt”

    Command Prompt can be opened in several ways. From “Start Menu” or from “Run Command window” with “cmd” command. And by right clicking on the Windows icon, you will get “Command Prompt”.

  2. Open “Properties”

    As you open the Command Prompt window, you will need to right click on the title bar. From the menu options, you will need to click on the “Properties”.

  3. Hover to Colors section

    Inside the properties window, there are 5 other sections; Options, Font, Layout, Colors and Terminal. From that, you will need to be on the “Colors” section.

  4. Change “Screen Background” color

    Select the “Screen Background” option and then select the preferred color from the given color options below. You can check the preview right below there.

  5. Change “Screen Text” color

    Select the “Screen Text” option and then select the preferred color from the given color options below. You can check the preview right below there.

  6. Popup “Text and Background” color change

    There is an option to change the color of popup text and popup background colors.

  7. Click “OK”

    After changing color of text and background, you just need to click on the “OK” button to save.

Change Text Size an Font Type on Command Prompt

The default text size in cmd prompt is tiny. But it is pretty easy to read it. Still some people might find it difficult to rear those small texts. For them, text on the cmd can be changed.

  1. Open “Command Prompt”
  2. Open “Properties”
  3. Click on the “Font” section
    Inside properties window, there are 5 other sections. You will need to be on the “Font” section.

  4. Select preferred “Size” for font
    There you can select the preferred text size. The smallest one from the list is 5 and the largest one is 72. The default is set to size 16. Select preferred one.

  6. Select preferred “Font” type
    Below the size, you will get font type options. You can change the font type from there. However, there will be very few font type options only. The default one is “Consolas” font. Select the preferred one by checking the preview below.

  7. Click “OK”
    After changing text size and font type, you just need to click on the “OK” button.

Changing font size and type can be much helpful while you are mirroring your PC screen through a projector. Also, changing black background to white and text color to darker color will help in projecting.
