DJI Mavic Air 2 Overview
Starting with the design, the new Mavic Air 2 is completely redesigned and is slightly bigger and heavier than its predecessor. It has a dimension of 183 x 253 x 77mm however looks completely like a smaller version of Mavic 2 Pro but actually better. It comes with grey housing identical to Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom.
The Mavic Air 2 comes with a bigger controller. The phone mount has been shifted from the bottom to the top. Unlike other controllers, antennas isn’t visible instead the area is used for mounting the smartphone.
The new sensor inside the Mavic Air 2 features a half-inch 48MP Sony IMX586 Quad Bayer sensor. It captures 12MP pixel binned image by default and you can also choose to capture the full 48MP resolution image. The sensor has an aperture of f/2.8 with 84-degree Field-of-View and is fixed lens of 28mm. The drone uses advanced scene analysis and deep learning and switches between one of three modes HDR, Hyperlight and scene recognition, which the DJI calls SmartPhoto feature.
In HDR mode the camera s=captures seven different photos with different exposure and combines them to give a single good looking photo. Whereas, hiperlight is a low-light mode where the camera captures several images and merge them together to create a single image with less noise than would be possible with a single image. Scene recognition analyses different scenes like sunsets, grass, snow, trees to automatically adjust setting in order to provide best scenery. The Air 2 also shoots HDR panorama photos.
For video, the Mavic Air 2 can shoot 4K footage at up to 60fps. It also has option to shoot HDR video (4K at 30fps) and hyperlapse in 8K. Additionally, the drone is capable of shooting in 120/204fps at 1080p with 4x and 8x slow motion.
The Air 2 has improved flight performance making it capable to stay up in the Air for up to 34 minutes, which is 13 minutes more than its previous version. All thanks to new motors, electronic speed controllers, aerodynamics and improved 3500mAh battery.
One of the biggest change is the fact that it is switched from Wi-Fi in the previous model to OcuSync 2.0 transmission technology which lets you to fly further. You can get a stable feed from the drone at a maximum distance of 10Km with no obstructions.
Mavic Air 2 is the smartest and safest drone yet from DJI where a pilot can choose from four flight modes – Free movement, Circle, CourseLock and WayPoints. It features new obstacle sensors and comes equipped with AirSense. Obstacle sensor warns when they are too close to the objects to avoid collision and automatically stops. On the other side AirSense technology detects the nearby aircrafts and warns the operators with messages, sounds and vibrations, displaying the locations of aircrafts on the screen.
The Mavic Air 2 features three different FocusTrack modes which is advanced than any of its drones. First, ActiveTrack 3.0 tracks a subject with state-of-the-art mapping technology and new flight path algorithms and obstacle avoidance. Second, Point of Interest 3.0 lets you to atomically set flight path around a specific object with improved surface recognition to better dynamically track subjects. Lastly, the third Spotlight 2.0 locks a subject in the frame while the user has free operation of the drone’s movement.
