We have seen lots of chipsets in the year 2020. in the end of the year, the powerful chipset based on 5nm fabrication process were introduced. Till now, we have only three 5nm chipsets for Android. Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 9000 was the first 5nm chipset in market, later fallowed by Samsung’s Exynos 1080 then Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. Here, we will be doing chipset comparison between Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 1080 SoC. “Is Samsung’s Exynos 1080 chipset powerful then Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888?” Let’s check it out!

Chipset Comparison

CPU
Both Exynos 1080 as well as Snapdragon 888 have the octa-core CPU. However, the cores here are different with different clock speed. Samsung’s Exynos has 4 ARM Cortex A-55 clocked at 2.0 GHz. Also, the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 has the same number of Cortex A-55. However, it is clocked at 1.8 GHz only.
Other 4 Cores in Exynos are Cortex-A78 where 3 of them are clocked at 2.6 GHz and one is clocked at 2.84 GHz. Compared with Snapdragon, from the remaining 4 cores, three of them are Cortex-A78 clocked at 2.40 GHz. And the last one core is ARM Cortex-X1 clocked at 2.84 GHz. Both have their 1 core clocked at 2.84 GHz.
So, being more specific to the chip comparison with cores, ARM claims that Cortex-X1 is better than Cortex-A78. X1 brings 30% more improvement in performance over the Cortex-A77. Whereas, A78 brings 20% improvement on performance over the A77. This clears out, X1 is 10% much better in performance than the A78.
Moving on to the real life test of these chipset, the Vivo X60 Pro with Exynos 1080 scored a total of 634,373 points. on the other hand Mi 11 with Snapdragon 888 scored 702,819 in total and topped the benchmark. These were the commercial test and the Samsung’s Exynos 1080 don’t appear to be near around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888.
GPU
Exynos 1080 has Mali-G78 MP10 GPU and Snapdragon 888 has Adreno 660 GPU. If the Mali-G78 MP10 is compared with Adreno 650 GPU of Snapdragon 865+ then 1080 results pretty better. However, if compared to Adreno 660 GPU of the Snapdragon 888 then Exynos 1080 is quite far to match with 888. Qualcomm posted a video that benchmarked the Snapdragon 888 on AnTuTu which showed a GPU score of 319,439 points. Whereas, Mali-G78 MP10’s score is 239,408 points.
RAM support
The Samsung Exynos 1080 can support LPDDR5 RAM up to 16 GB. Also, Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 can support LPDDR5 but up to 20 GB. More RAM will significantly boast performance.
Multimedia: ISP / NPU / AI
Exynos 1080 has a powerful Neural Processor as NPU whereas Snapdragon 888 has Hexagon 780 as NPU. Exynos 1080’s NPU aren’t specified. But Hexagon 780 Processor is a 2nd gen Qualcomm Sensing Hub with Large shared AI memory, Qualcomm Hexagon Voice Assistant Accelerator, Qualcomm Hexagon Scalar Accelerator, Qualcomm Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX) and Qualcomm Hexagon Tensor Accelerator.
Multimedia includes display and storage as well. So, chip comparison of Exynos 1080 and Snapdragon 888 over display, resolution and storage according to reports, 1080 has max support of 2960 x 1440 resolution. Whereas, SD 888 supports 3840 x 2160 resolution max.
They both are capable of supporting one 200 MP camera sensor. However, the 1080 is capable of two 32 MP sensors but SD 888 can support two 25 MP sensors. Still, SD 888 is capable of capturing 8K video at 30 FPS and 4K at 120 FPS. But Exynos 1080 can capture 4K at 60 FPS only.
Chipset Comparison: Conclusion
The Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 surpasses the Samsung’s Exynos 1080 easily and is victorious. Meaning, SD 888 is better than Exynos 1080 in both CPU and GPU performance. Not to forget it has an elder sibling on the line Exynos 2100. Through the Exynos 1080 couldn’t beat SD 888, but performance very well. Moreover, the powerful Exynos 2100 will be the better option to compete with the Snapdragon 888.
